no there's a certain way you can get your hair braided on the sides and then the middle will be the mohawk.....talk to a styleist or someone near you who knows how to do hair and they should know

No you don't have to shave the sides of your hair off. What you probably want to do is style your hair into a fauxhawk. It's a mohawk where you don't buzz the sides of your head. Part and section off the part of your hair that you want to be a mohawk. Put it in a pony tail so it's not in the way. Then take some heavy duty gel like dep level 10 (which is super cheap and can be found at any local drug store; CVS Walgreens etc.) and slick the hair on the sides of the mohawk back. For the mohawk itself you'll need to use one of two things depending on how stubborn your hair is. For hair that's not so stubborn use Garnier Fructis's Super Stiff Gel to style it the way you want. For stubborn hair or to ensure your mohawk lasts the whole day, use Garnier Fructis's Fiber Gum Putty. That stuff is sick and does a really good job. It works best if your hair is dry but it can work if you hair is wet too.
